Da Vera Biologico White 2017 (organic)
There’s no better example of our approach to wine-hunting this year than the Da Vero Biologico 2017. This bright, ripe, crisp little number from Sicily is made from Catarratto grapes that are grown organically. It’s even vegan friendly too. It could only be more eco-warrior friendly if it wore sandals and played the ukulele.
On the palate there’s a fantastic combination of ripe stone fruits and crisp acidity making this wine really versatile. Drink it alone or pair it with seafood or risottos, it’s happy either way.
Sicily’s warm, dry climate is ideal for organic cultivation and most vineyards already use very little spraying against diseases and pests. So the island is a great source of good, affordable organic wines. The Da Vero wines (‘davvero’ meaning ‘really’ or ‘naturally’ in Italian) are the result of our supplier’s long relationship (over 10 years) with a cooperative in Sicily. They also happen to have the island’s largest plantings of organic vines!
The Catarratto grapes are sourced from the north-west corner of Sicily – at Calatafimi, between Marsala and Palermo. These Guyot-trained vines grow in high altitude vineyards (around 500m) with chalky soils. The vineyards were converted to organic viticulture in 2005. The grapes are gently pressed and the must vinified at 16ºC. Maturation in stainless steel.
It’s astonishing value too at just £8.00 or just £7.20 to wine club members. Buy a case of six and that’s just £43.20. Bonkers.
