Red Wine

Château Los Boldos Tradition Réserve Carmènere 2016 £13

Icon-Grape-webCarmènere

Icon-Origin-webCachapoal Valley, Chile

New to our shelves and just in time for the cooler Autumn evenings, a truly comforting Carmènere! Rounded and soft in texture with ripe dark fruit character a hint of spice and chocolate. Though intense in colour, a deep red, and full of flavour it’s not an overpowering wine. Fruits and tannins balance to a ‘T’…

Located in the foothills of the Andes the temperature in the vineyard is moderated by the cooler nightime air and the nearby river, as a result the fruit ripens to perfection whilst retaining fresh acidity. In the winery the wine spends 6 months ageing in French oak and a small amount in American new oak and then blended, softening the tannins and adding complexity. This tasty red calls for a hearty stew.

Classic Style Organic Zweigelt 2017 £12.50

Icon-Grape-webZweigelt

Icon-Origin-webÖsterreich, Austria

Vibrant, fruity and organic! A great introduction to Austrian wine if you haven’t got round to exploring wines from this part of the world. The fragrance is blackberries followed by bright red fruits on the palate, all mingling with the white pepper and spice characteristic of the Zweigelt grape variety. Producer, Sepp Moser, is committed to the Organic and Biodynamic cause so every care has been taken in the vineyard to grow organically and diligently hand-harvest. Classic Zweigelt has seen no oak and delivers pure juicy fruit. It is a lovely mid-weight red perfect partner for tomato based dishes, pasta, pizza or light meats.

Peter Bayly III 2012 £14

Icon-Grape-webTouriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca, Souzao

Icon-Origin-webCalitzdorp, South Africa

A wine borne from a spark of curiosity blending 3 Portuguese grape varieties to make a South African red table wine. And what a result! Peter bayly III delivers concentrated fruit, it has warm and welcoming plum and fruit cake characters reminiscnet of Port yet balanced by structure and elegance. Peter Bayly is living his dream in a secluded valley growing grapes to make mostly Port-style wines and the occassional red such as this, a very satisfying drop which he recommends with meats, hearty and Mediterranean dishes.

White Wine

Wirra Wirra ‘Scrubby Rise’ Unwooded Chardonnay 2017 £11

Icon-Grape-webChardonnay

Icon-Origin-webMcLaren Vale, Australia

Scrubby Rise Unwooded Chardonnay is all about pure fruit. Bursting with fresh citrus, sweet stone fruits and ripe melon, this white has bags of flavour whilst refreshing and crisp. The winemaking focuses on retaining all the flavour and freshness of the ripe fruit: night harvest, cool fermentation and not a hint of oak.

In case your wondering about the quirky name and label…‘Scrubby Rise’ was the name given many moons ago to the vineyard in front of the century-old cellars, a flat and barren landscape with beautifully rich soils. Wirra Wirra went on to build a viewing platform overlooking their sea of vines to be nicknamed ‘The Jetty’ hence the boat!

This wine is to be enjoyed with good food and company, roast chicken with all the trimmings would be just the ticket.

Jean-Luc Colombo ‘Les Abeilles’ 2015, £12

Icon-Grape-webClairette, Roussanne, Grenache blanc, Viognier

Icon-Origin-webCôtes du Rhône, France

A soft-textured, fleshy white with a deliciously fresh finish. ‘Les Abeilles’ is vibrant and aromatic, peaches and white blossom come to mind. The palate has structure and a moreish full texture making it a great accompaniment for roasted and grilled white meats or a gooey Camembert. Jean-Luc pays homage to the crucial role of bees in his vineyard by naming this wine after these beautiful and clever insects.

Sparkling

Il Selvatico Cuvée Frizzante £9.50

Icon-Grape-webGlera blend

Icon-Origin-webVeneto, Italy

Last and certainly not least,  a Frizzante for all seasons! A lightly sparkling and dry style wine perfect for pre-dinner drinks or a lunchtime treat. Golden, light, fresh and fun with delicate floral notes, ripe pear and yellow stone fruits on the palate and a refreshing finish. A cracking value Prosecco alternative from Vinicola Tombacco.

Sparkling Wine

Langlois-Château Crémant de Loire Rosé NV £18

Icon-Grape-webCabernet Franc

Icon-Origin-webLoire Valley, France

Icon-Price-webFresh, fruity and full-bodied sparkling rosé. Strawberry scented and bursting with ripe raspberries and a touch of blackcurrant. Simply delicious!

Icon-Maker-webMade with Cabernet Franc grapes traditionally used to make Loire Valley reds. Top quality grapes are selected and hand-picked before going through the ‘Traditional Method’, whereby a secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle (just like for Champagne)

Icon-Pairing-webA fun summertime fizz, which is a perfect aperitif or could also be enjoyed with a summer fruit dessert.

White Wine

Langlois-Château Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie 2017 £12.50

Icon-Grape-webMelon de Bourgogne

Icon-Origin-webLoire Valley, France

Icon-Price-webEverything you would want from a Muscadet! A fresh, fruity and friendly wine. Delicate aromas of stone and citrus fruit which continue in flavour on the palate. A refreshing drop with an enjoyable lasting finish.

Icon-Maker-webTo retain the aromatics and fresh character of the variety fermentation is carried out slowly and at low temperatures. The wine is left on its lees for a few months to develop further flavour and texture.

Icon-Pairing-webCalling out for shellfish or even whole fish cooked on the barbecue.

Revenant 2017 £10.50

Icon-Grape-webSauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc

Icon-Origin-webWestern Cape, South Africa

Icon-Price-webThe winning blend of Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc once common-place in the Loire Valley delivers a bright white with uplifting citrus fruit aromatics. Revenant has a perfect balance of fruit, weight and texture making for a versatile and food friendly white.

Icon-Maker-webRevenant demonstrates the re-birth of tradition in Western Cape winemaking, returning to natural ways in the vineyard and wineries with minimal intervention being key. It also celebrates their return to blending and re-visiting, once lost, Old World blends.

Icon-Pairing-webAfter 10 months of ageing on the lees this wine has developed plenty of texture. It can pair with so many different dishes from barbecued pork, roast chicken, creamy sauces and seafood.

Rosé Wine

Côtes du Rhône ‘Les Cerisiers’ Rosé 2017 £11.00

Icon-Grape-webGrenache Noir, Cinsault, Syrah

Icon-Origin-webCôtes du Rhône, France

Icon-Price-webMike came across this rosé on his adventures last year and fell in love and it would seem it has had the same effect on our customers! Pretty salmon -pink, beautifully and delicately aromatic with a full-flavoured ripe red berry palate. Soft and textured whilst elegant… very moreish indeed.

Icon-Maker-webMeticulous selection of vineyards, specific plots and fruit is paramount to winemaker Eric Monnin in the quest to produce expressive, balanced and flavoursome wine.

Icon-Pairing-webThough extremely food-friendly, pop open with lunch, it is very content to be enjoyed on its own!

Red Wine

Langlois-Château Saumur-Champigny 2016 £15

Icon-Grape-webCabernet Franc

Icon-Origin-webLoire Valley, France

Icon-Price-webA delicious summertime red which we would suggest serving slightly chilled. A beautiful cherry red in colour, super juicy and medium-bodied. This Cabernet Franc is intensely aromatic with bright red fruits and violets prevailing followed by a fruity, rounded palate.

Icon-Maker-webAll care is taken to retain the fresh and juicy fruit flavours of the Cabernet Franc grapes. For example, the grapes are harvested in plots and all pickings macerated separately in steel tanks at low temperatures.

Icon-Pairing-webFabulous with grilled white meats and fish.

 Norton Porteño Malbec 2017 £12

Icon-Grape-webMalbec

Icon-Origin-webLujan de Cuyo, Argentina

Icon-Price-webA vibrant, un-oaked and fresher style of Malbec. One for summertime sipping naturally with a barbecue on the go. Don’t be put off by Porteño’s slightly lighter style, it has bags of aroma, flavour and smooth structure. Juicy black fruits, wild red fruits and some spice all rub shoulders in this medium-bodied red.

Icon-Maker-webThough not certified as Organic the Norton vineyard and winery are run on organic lines. Minimal intervention, hand-picking and using natural yeasts are just part of the process.

Red Wine

Passitivo Organico 2015 £12.50

Icon-Grape-web100% Primitivo

Icon-Origin-webPuglia, Italy

Icon-Price-webI properly love this wine – a real “find”.  Intense ruby-red colour, with a complex bouquet, reminiscent of cherries, raspberries and redcurrants. The oak aging adds a pleasant roasted and spicy aroma. On the palate, it is full-bodied, supple and well-balanced with a long finish.

Icon-Maker-webIn mid August, when the grapes have reached perfect maturity and are ready to be picked, a special technique called “il giro del picciolo”(the twisting of the stem), is applied. This consists in twisting the stem of the grape bunches so that no further nourishment reaches the grapes, thus inducing a natural drying of the grapes on the vine. The grapes are left on the plant for approximately 12 days, and lose around 25-30% of their weight in water, concentrating their flavors before harvest.  The wine is aged for 5 months in American oak barriques and 6 months in stainless steel tanks.

Icon-Pairing-webRoast meats, BBQs or charcuterie.

Paxton Grenache 2016 2016 £22.00

Icon-Grape-web

100% Grenache

Icon-Origin-webMcLaren Vale, Australia

Icon-Price-webVibrant red in colour.  Great nose with hints of plum fruit, mulberries, and rhubarb.  Light to medium bodied wine with a soft, juicy palate, plum richness and elegant tannins.

Icon-Maker-web2016 was a very strong year in McLaren Vale with the highest quality crops and highest yield crop this millennium.  20% of the carefully hand-picked harvest was used as whole bunches, with the remainder gently de-stemmed.  Aged in French oak barriques for six months prior to blending and bottling.  Ready to drink now but also would keep well for 5 – 10 years.  Might be worth tucking a case away if you store it carefully!

Icon-Pairing-webRabbit, game, good sausages, slow roasted pork – that sort of thing.

Sparkling Wine

Il Grillo di Santa Tresa Vino Spumante Biologico £15.00

Icon-Grape-webGrillo

Icon-Origin-webItaly

Icon-Price-webPale straw coloured with hints of gold, Grillo Spumante has fine, gentle bubbles and a fresh fruity nose with hints of citrus and floral notes. On the palate the wine is very well balanced, gentle
and soft with a refreshing burst of acidity and spectacular fruity notes.

Icon-Maker-webFollowing de-stemming, the grapes are gently pressed in a pneumatic press. Prior to fermentation, the juice is chilled, allowing the solid particles to settle naturally, giving a clear juice ready for fermentation. Selected yeasts are added to initiate fermentation. As soon as the fermentation is finished, the wine is racked to another stainless steel tank. Here it is stored at a controlled temperature while the secondary fermentation takes place. In order to maintain the optimum level of natural acidity, malolactic fermentation does not take place.

Icon-Pairing-webJust so drinkable on it’s own but would go down a treat with oysters!

White Wine

Terra Sana Sauvignon Blanc 2016 £12

Icon-Grape-web100% Sauvignon Blanc

Icon-Origin-webCôtes de Gascogne, France

Icon-Price-webVery fresh and complex nose with a combination of citrus fruits, lemongrass, green apple and lychee aromas.
Elegant and well balanced, with green apple and lemon flavours and great length of finish.

Icon-Maker-webWine maker François Lurton has a true passion for naturally produced wines. The brand Terra Sana was launched over a decade ago, offering both white, red and rosé wines produced from organically grown grapes of selected varieties and terroirs.

Icon-Pairing-webA very versatile and approachable wine.  Good with pre-dinner nibbles but would also work nicely with prawns or oily fish.

Paxton “The Guesser” 2017 £13.50

Icon-Grape-webSauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris

Icon-Origin-webMcLaren Vale, Australia

Icon-Price-webA very moreish wine – buy one today and I reckon we’ll see you tomorrow for more! Bright tropical fruit, grapefruit, lemon and lime.  This wine has got it all going on!

Icon-Maker-web2017 was a fantastic year for winemaking in McLaren Vale with an extremely wet winter and a consistent Spring and Summer with mild days and cool nights.  All this made for a slow ripening season resulting in fragrant whites with lower acidity.  There’s a lush edge to The Guesser that we think you’ll love.

Icon-Pairing-webEnjoy with a Spring chicken dish or as a nicely chilled glass whilst cooking the dinner!

Rosé Wine

Terra Sana Rosé 2017 £12.00

Icon-Grape-webGrenache 60%, Cinsault 40%

Icon-Origin-webIGP Pays D’oc, France

Icon-Price-webPale-pink colour but with really intense aromas of white flowers, peach and a hint of lemon.  On the palate this rosé is really well balanced being both fresh and light but with a bit more body to it than your typical Provence style rosé.

Icon-Maker-webThe vineyards selected for the Terra Sana Rosé are located in the Gard department (“Petite Camargue”), on hillsides where the vines are better drained, more ventilated and perfectly bathed in sunlight, thus allowing a regularly healthy vineyard.  Happy vines equals happy wines!

Icon-Pairing-webPerfect for quaffing in the sun but with enough about it to carry off a food match too.  Did someone say shellfish?

‘Logis de la Bouchardière’ Chinon 2015 £12.50

Icon-Grape-webCabernet Franc

Icon-Origin-webLoire, France

Icon-Price-webThis is a deliciously succulent mid-weight red which has seen a touch of old-oak ageing. Fragrant, fruity and herbaceous combine with supple tannins and lengthy finish. A stylish, great value and very tasty Chinon indeed!

Icon-Maker-webBruno Sourdais is at the helm of The Logis de la Bourchardière, a domaine dating back to 1850 with its oldest vines being over 100 years old. The fruit for this Chinon come from grapes from some of the younger vines, approx 30 year old.

Icon-Pairing-webIt just has to be Charcuterie.

Rebel Canyon Merlot 2016 £9

Icon-Grape-webMerlot

Icon-Origin-webCalifornia, USA

Icon-Price-webThis new addition is a hit. Not only is it great value but it lives up to Merlot expectations, juicy fruit, ripe plums and dark cherries, soft tannins, rich and smooth, an easy drinking drop.

Icon-Maker-webYou’ll find no oak here just bags of fruit. The dark-skinned Merlot grapes reach optimum ripens in the Californian climate, Rebel blends Merlot fruit from different growers to make a rounded juicy wine with balance and elegance.

Icon-Pairing-webThe perfect evening partner!

Bodegas Murviedo Bobal Cepas Viejas £12.50

Icon-Grape-webBobal

Icon-Origin-webUtiel Requena, Spain

Icon-Price-webAromatic and bursting with flavour. Forest fruit characters sit alongside a little spice, vanilla and mocha notes. This red has plenty going on… structure, silky tannins, fruity yet fresh with a long and pleasantly dry finish.

Icon-Maker-webThe Bobal variety thrives in extreme conditions, long hot sunny days and cool nights, the result for these old vines is a low yet very high quality yield of fruit. After fermentation the wine is aged in new American and French oak for 8 months.

Icon-Pairing-webA great match for a Lamb roast.

Sparkling Wine

Val D’Oca Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superior, Rive Di Colbertaldo NV £15.50

Icon-Grape-webGlera

Icon-Origin-webVeneto, Italy

Icon-Price-webA beautifully fine, dry and lively sparkling, layers of flavour, depth and finesse. Soft and appley with just the right amount of zing to get your taste buds tingling. It is rich in both aroma, flavour and structure.

Icon-Maker-webThe best grapes from the Colbertaldo area are carefully selected and hand-picked to make this delicious and favourite Prosecco.

White Wine

Da Vero Vino Biologico White 2017 £8

Icon-Grape-webCatarratto

Icon-Origin-webSicily, Italy

Icon-Price-webBright and crisp. Ripe stone fruits, citrus and zippy acidity makes for a fab combination and a very versatile light white.

Icon-Maker-webSicily’s dry climate is conducive to Organic agricultural practises and the vines for Da Vero have been grown organically since 2005. The fruit is fermented at a cool temperature and aged in stainless steel tanks retaining aromatics, acidity and freshness of fruit.

Icon-Pairing-webPre-dinner nibbles suits this white just fine. Seafood or risottos are the go if you want to give this white a pairing.

Domaine Pré Baron Sauvignon Blanc 2016 £10.50

Icon-Origin-webTouraine, Loire Valley

Icon-Price-webOur faithful friend, Pré Baron Sauvignon Blanc is a classic Touraine Sauvignon and a beautifully refreshing springtime wine. Intensely aromatic, herbaceous and fruity nose. The palate is bursting with gooseberries, fresh and zingy.

Icon-Maker-webThe best fruit is selected and hand-picked from 25 year old vines. After a slow three week fermentation the wine is aged on the lees until bottling in the Spring.

Cracker Case Display Shop 2017 - half size

Christmas Crackers Case 2017

We are delighted to announce the launch of this year’s Christmas Crackers case, a truly special selection of goodies tailored to the Christmas and Boxing Day festivities. We thought it was time for a treat, choosing twelve splendid bottles we know you will love, if you can’t do it at Christmas when can you?

Christmas Day Fizz

Lallier Blanc de Blancs NV, Champagne, France £41.00, 2 bottles

When there are so many lovely Champagnes on our shelves, it’s really hard to pick a winner for Christmas Day. This year though, this gem just edges ahead of the rest – a seductive Blanc de Blancs from family-run Lallier in Aÿ. Made from Grand Cru vineyards in both the Côte des Blancs and Avize, it is at once both delicate and complex on the nose with seductive aromas of autolysis, akin to fresh-baked croissants. The palate delivers a full, creamy richness and beautiful clarity. You’ll be sipping again and again – so to plump for two bottles seems a really very good idea.

Turkey and Trimmings

White Wine

Macon Pierreclos 2015, Marc Jambon, Burgundy, France £17.00, 2 bottles

White Burgundy on Christmas Day might seem a little obvious – but hey, let’s relax into this very tasty number from a small biodynamic producer. It’s the texture and flavour here that deliver well: plenty of ripeness, but also a good lick of limey freshness to back up all that fruit. A really expressive find with much of the versatility we all need for the Christmas Feast.

Red Wine

Ontañon Reserva 2005, Rioja, Spain  £16.00, 2 bottles

And what better red accompaniment to all those vibrant Christmas flavours than a mature, spicy Rioja? Bodegas Ontañon is located in the Rioja Baja, among groves of peaches and nectarines, while the grapes for their Reserva come from their 800m La Pasada vineyard. Predominantly Tempranillo, with just 5% of the racy variety Graciano, the blend spent 12 months in American and French oak, with the rest of the ageing in bottle. A red that’s comfy enough for Auntie Mabel, yet with enough character for you, dear reader.

For your Christmas Pud

Morris Black Label Rutherglen Muscat NV, Rutherglen, Australia  £21.00, 1 bottle (50cl)

Rutherglen, that small wine-growing region of Victoria, Australia – produces a rare creation: a wine that can stand up to the pudding itself. It is the ‘Muscat à Petits Grains Rouge’ variety that creates such sweet pleasures, but paramount is the skill of the winemaker David, himself a fifth-generation Morris. Wines both young and old are blended to achieve this level of perfection: caramel and candied peel aromas yield to sweet raisin on the silkiest of palates, while the rich balance is restored on the finish with a light brandy note. Please don’t drink this too cold: room temperature, or only very gently chilled.

Cheese Please

Henriques 1998 Single Harvest Madeira, Madeira  £28.00, 1 bottle (50cl)

And meanwhile, on a tiny island far out in the Atlantic Ocean, Henriques & Henriques have been making wine since 1913. Vintage wines are not unusual – but this example certainly is: the balance between rich, sweet fruit, grilled-almond ‘estufagem’ notes (from the unique Madeira process) and the typical racy ‘rancio’ acidity is nothing short of eye-opening. Drink this little gem with all your favourite cheeses: Helford Blue, grapes and crackers or maybe finest Lancashire and Mince Pies.

Now for Boxing Day…
An Aperitif

Langlois Cremant de Loire Rose NV, Loire , France  £17.00, 1 bottle

What a way to unwind on Boxing Day – a truly relaxed Traditional Method Rosé made from a variety attracting a lot of buzz just now: Cabernet Franc. BinTwo die-hards will know well their Saumurs both red and white – but do leave space in the ice-bucket please for this dry and refreshing, strawberry-scented gem from the Langlois team. We’ll be sure at some stage to introduce you to the ever-ebullient François de Régis Fougeroux – the Grand Fromage of this extraordinary Loire Valley outfit.

The Boxing Day Buffet

Château l’Ermitage Cuvée Sainte Cécile 2013, Costières de Nîmes, France  £14.50, 2 bottles

A traditional Languedoc blend of Syrah, Mourvèdre (with a little Grenache) from our favourite Southern Rhone producer. Selling out on our weekly ‘Decanter Saturday’ spot, you’ll immediately see why – and without wishing to beat the drum too hard, it’s all about the balance. Solid, chunky fruit, yes – but also a gentle hand with the oak notes – only small old oak barrels are used here. Dark, dry bramble fruit on the nose, and with the deep fruit in the mouth, a refreshing tightener of juicy Mourvèdre tannin. The finish is long and velvety, with subtle, oaky backbone. A wine that’s as much at home with glazed ham as it is with a Boxing Day roast. We think two bottles might not be quite enough – this red offers such cracking value.

A Fireside Quaffer

‘Max’ 2014, Miles Mossop, Stellenbosch, S. Africa  £20.00, 1 bottle

One would hope that by the Christmas fire, there’s time to sniff, swill and savour as well as quaff? Either way, Max delivers superlative after superlative. It’s a classic Bordeaux blend, crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot – yet is unmistakably New World, even behind the solid French oak and minty Cabernet structure. A delight in so many ways – and as delicious to sip on its own and wax lyrical on Christmasses Past as it is to enjoy with a roast beef sandwich during Christmas Present. A long-standing BinTwo fave.

Red Wine

Côtes du Rhône Villages ‘Les Coteaux’ 2014 £10

Icon-Grape-webGrenache, Syrah

Icon-Origin-webRhône, France

Icon-Price-webOne of our best-sellers and understandably-so, Les Coteaux is an impressive wine with both quality and value on its side. Velvety and opulent black fruits, specifically blackberries, satisfying sweet spice and hints of oak combine to make a very tasty and comforting wine.

Icon-Maker-webEric Monin selects the ‘crème de la crème’ fruit from 17 of the Cotes du Rhone Villages vineyards to make Les Coteaux . He then goes one step further by enriching the blend with wine from the more prestigious and classified wines of Sablet, Cairanne and Séguret.

Icon-Pairing-webThe perfect partner for a hearty casserole.

‘Les Six’ Cairanne 2014 £13

Icon-Grape-webGrenache Noir, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsault, Counoise and Carignan Noir

Icon-Origin-webCairanne, Côtes du Rhône, France

Icon-Price-webThe virtues of this gem certainly struck a chord with Mike. ‘Les Six’ is a wine which exalts the qualities and character of 6 Southern Rhône grape varieties, including the lesser known Counoise variety. The result is a rich yet elegant palate with soft, sweet red fruits, integrated tannins and judicious oak.

Icon-Maker-webGrapes are carefully selected, hand-picked then co-fermented. Manual pigeage (grape stomping) is still carried out here in order to mix the grape skins (break the cap) with the juice. The wine is aged for under 12 months in very large oak vats.

Icon-Pairing-webI’m thinking Duck confit, however this wine would pair nicely with beef, lamb and game whether roasted, grilled or in a casserole.

Meseneros de Castilla Roble 2015 £12

Icon-Grape-webTinta del País (Tempranillo)
