With Easter on the horizon and Spring in the air this month’s ‘Wines We Love’ just had to be a wine to enjoy with Springtime feasts, roasted lamb, a spring hot-pot, all that delicious veg and perhaps even your first BBQ of the year, bring on the sunshine!
A delicious, mid-weight Rioja was the answer. As staunch supporters of family-owned estate, Bodegas Artesa, the bottle has a familiar face but I can assure you it’s a fab new arrival… Meet the tasty Organic sibling of the Artesa Crianza that we know and love.
This flavoursome red is juicy, brambly and savoury. A vibrant 100% Tempranillo with bags of ripe fruit, a layer of comforting creamy vanilla, spice and black pepper in perfect measures and fine integrated tannins. Enjoyably dry, fresh and incredibly moreish, one bottle just won’t be enough!
Bodegas Artesa take top quality fruit from the best zones in Rioja Baja, an exceptionally warm and dry region favouring grape -ripening. Their best vineyards are at high altitude where vines are mature and low-yielding and conditions perfect for growing characterful fruit and organic production. Organic Rioja 2015 is certainly fruit-driven and fresh yet the clever folk at Artesa seek to create a rounded and complex wine, the 6 months of ageing in new American oak certainly does the trick bringing in layers of fine tannin and that sumptuous vanilla.
A lovely new addition at £9.50 a bottle, that’s £8.55 to our wine club members. Superb value for a Rioja that rocks!
We know for a fact that there’s many a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc fan among us but there’s so much more to discover with New Zealand wines and we’re here to help with Flight Club #9.
For instance, last year we discovered Left Field Albarino. Better known as a Spanish varietal, this Albarino has proven to be hugely popular with all who tasted it. Fresh, light & peachy with a crisp acidity but oh so juicy with it. It feels like each grape used to make this wine has soaked up every last bit of sunshine that kissed it’s skin.
We really weren’t surprised to discover that the Left Field Pinot Noir is equally as delicious too and so we are delighted to invite NZ wine whizz Angela Lewis to come to Cornwall and tell us all about the wines from the Te Awa and Left Field collections. Bonus!
Located near Hawkes Bay on New Zealand’s North Island, Te Awa sits within the famous Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District, known worldwide for producing premium wines. The cracking selection we’ll have on hand to aid your discovery will look very much like this:
6 fantastic and generous wine tasters with a selection of accompanying food will be on offer on the night. If you think canapes and sharing boards, you’ll get the idea. We’ll finish off with a traditional Kiwi treat and have the bar open afterwards until around 10.30pm for those of you’d who’d like an extra little tipple.
Flight Club will take place at Hawksfield near Wadebridge on Saturday 28th October between 7pm and 9.30pm with a cash bar opening until 10.30(ish).
10% discount will be applied across the board on all bar and bottle sales with case sales attracting a more generous 15% off.
Tickets for Flight Club #9 are priced at a modest £40pp BOOK NOW and pay online to confirm your spaces. Let us know if you’d like transport (or if you have spaces in a car available) and we’ll co-ordinate taxis and/or car shares from Padstow.

Lurton Le Fumé Blanc Sauvignon Blanc 2015 £12.50
Fresh, floral and delicate, this pretty yellow-green sauvignon is a white to celebrate springtime. Citrus, grapefruit, and tropical fruits combine with a soft mouthfeel and lead to a refreshingly lengthy and herbaceous finish.
‘Les Fumées Blanches’ is a great value white made by world renowned winemaker François Lurton, whose family’s winemaking history dates back to 1800’s. François has returned to his roots and vineyards in Bordeaux after spreading the Lurton wings in Spain and South America to continue his passion in the cellar.
If spring veg such as asparagus are on the menu look no further!
