What’s Flight Club? I’m glad you asked… it’s a series of informal tasting events where we combine a little bit education with a healthy dollop of fun. You get to taste some lovely stuff in an ever so slightly structured way so that, if you wish to, you can learn a little bit more about wine. But we’ll keep things light so that if all you want to do is try some different bits and bobs, you won’t feel like you’ve been dropped into night school. We provide you with little crib cards with just enough information to cover the basics and a bit of room for your own notes so that, as Flight Club progresses, you can build a pocket sized compendium of wine facts.
Our sixth outing is the one you’ve all been waiting for judging by the number of advanced bookings we have…CHAMPAGNE!!! Excited? You should be because we’re really pushing the boat out on this occasion. John Atkinson (Master of Wine and all round nice guy) will be on hand to guide us through a tasting of six (yes SIX) different champagnes from Billecart-Salmon – our very favourite champagne house.
As we’re approaching Christmas we’ll pull back a little on the “schooling” element to allow more time to have a bit of a festive champagne party. We’ll be opening some incredibly special bottles for you to try and, because we’re good to you, the “tasters” will be a quite generous half glass measure with a full glass of whichever we choose to accompany your food (I’m vacillating between the Brût Rosé and the Blanc de Blanc).
That’s a whole lot of fizz already but we’ll be running a champagne bar for a while after the normal 9.30 Flight Club finishing time for those of you who’d like to enjoy an extra glass or two…we like to think we know our customers (dancing is not compulsory but is definitely not discouraged)!
More details? OK then – you’ll be quaffing the following gems:
Billecart-Salmon Brût Sous Bois (£65)
Billecart-Salmon Brût Rosé (£60)
Billecart-Salmon Blanc de Blanc (£62.50)
Billecart-Salmon Vintage 2006 Extra Brût (£65.50)
Billecart-Salmon Blanc de Blanc 2004 (£60)
All of which means you’ll be sampling the lion’s share of a bottle of Champagne. That’s a whole lot of fizz already but we’ll be running a champagne bar for a while after the normal 9.30 finishing time for our Flight Club events for those of you who’d like to do your homework and enjoy an extra glass or two of bubbly… we like to think we know our customers!
As if that wasn’t enough we’ll be upping the ante on the food offering too! The lovely Katy Davidson (otherwise known as the Oyster Lady) from Amity Seafood will be providing the catering which is looking something like:
Katy will be demonstrating the art of shucking oysters by way of introduction to an Oyster Masterclass that we’re planning for early in the New Year (watch this space)! We won’t be letting you loose with the knives on this occasion (highly entertaining though that might be) but I’m not sure our insurance is up to it!
As to the price…well it’s higher than for our usual Flight Club events for sure but then this isn’t really your average event! The price to enjoy just the Champagnes you’re sampling would be around £50 were you to drink them in BinTwo but, with some generous support from Billecart, with “Mate’s Rates” from Amity Seafood and with a bit of discount from us by way of thanks to our “students”, we’ve been able to bring the price in at a very modest £60 per person.
The event will be held at our Hub at Hawksfield between Wadebridge and Padstow between 7pm and 9.30pm with a cash bar opening until 10.30 (ish).
BOOK NOW and pay on line to confirm your places or email email@example.com. Let us know if you’d like transport (or if you have spaces in a car available) and we’ll co-ordinate taxis and/or car shares from Padstow.
Despite it being a very wet, very windy and very cold evening you braved the conditions in a suitably masculine manner and helped raise an impressive £250 for the Movember Foundation before the official fundraising period has even started. Top work gentlemen (and of course the ladies who came to watch your transformations!)
Thanks also of course to Claire and Olly from Gents Quarter barbershop for giving up an evening of their holiday to preen the men of Padstow. You’re both awesome.
Big love to Andrew from Swifties Beer for his kind sponsorship of the event. We’re loving your work Sir and look forward to selling your superb Cornish lager by the truck load! Thanks also to Marussia Beverages for standing us the whiskey – it rounded the night off nicely and in a suitably butch way.
A night of fun, laughs, beards, oils, shaves, trims, beers, whiskey, bourbon, cigars and general bonhomie – I love it when a plan comes together!
Herewith a few photographs to give a sense for the evening courtesy of the fabulous Sean Gee.
Festival veterans will know that there’s a real bustle in town during this busy weekend of revelry. We’ll be fulfilling our traditional role of providing a tranquil retreat from the crowds and our mulled wine and boozy hot chocolates will be on the terrace menu nestling up neatly against some of our favourite Christmas wines and spirits (Amaretto anyone?)
Of course the Christmas Festival just wouldn’t be the same without the famous BinTwo carol concert! What we lack in tonal quality we make up in enthusiasm so be sure to come and join in. Carols will start at 7pm (ish) on Friday 2nd December following on from the children’s Lantern Parade and leading nicely in to the fireworks display at 8.30pm.
Last year’s festival weekend was by far our busiest weekend ever on record. It was huge fun if a little hectic (possibly the understatement of 2016!) So we’re shaking things up a little this year by putting on a much tighter drinks range to give us the best possible chance of keeping the wine’s (and the team) nicely chilled and we’re hoping to set up a small drink’s station outside to help ease the crush in the shop.

Even though I’m still wearing my shorts, I may have to concede that it’s well and truly Autumn. So it’s time to ease back into some comforting warmer clothes and wines!! So with this in mind, and with the influence of our recent Flight Club #5 featuring wines from España, I couldn’t think of a better pick than this one. I’ve been a fan of Spanish wines for some time, and the Pasión de Bobal is a chart topper for me.
Pasión is 100% Bobal – a grape is native to Utiel-Requena, Valencia, and one of the most planted grapes in Spain second only to Tempranillo in volume. Bobal has long been used as a blending partner to the region’s more glamorous grape varieties but here it’s featured as the star of the show – try some and you’ll see why! Utiel-Requena is situated just inland of Valencia and the Finca Fuenteseca Estate, where the wine is produced by Sierra Norte, is a 67 Hectare vineyard which lies 1000 metres above sea level. A combination of hot dry summers, very cold nights and limestone soil, make for relatively disease free vines and therefore this estate is dedicated to organic wine production.
The grapes are harvested at the end of October, and the bunches are carefully sorted into small crates. Vinification is a long specially adapted process, beginning with a pre-fermentation cold soak, followed by a short alcoholic fermentation at low temperature. It then undergoes malolactic fermentation in 100% new French Oak Barrels where it ages for up to 6 months. The final stages of fining, stabilizing and filtering are carried out very carefully before bottling to ensure the wine maintains its character.
The result is a wine with a deep black cherry colour, a nose of red berries and black fruits, such as blackberries, strawberries and damson, and has a hint of sweet spice. The flavour is very fruit forward (my favourite kind), and includes a touch of vanilla, smoke and liquorice. It is well balanced with rounded tannins and delicious texture and layers of flavour that develop on the tongue.
Pasión is such excellent value for money and can even be purchased in a Magnum, a wonderful centrepiece for any party table!
So, if you’re looking for some Pasión in your life, then this is definitely one of the best ways to get it!

Durello Spumante Brut ‘Palladiano’ NV, Piemonte, Italy £9.00 2 bottles
On the streets of Verona this is the zippy sparkling of choice. Made from the local late-maturing grape variety ‘Durello’ grown on the Monferratto hills and producing a very tasty Prosecco alternative. Durello is fresh and zesty with light apple and honey flavours and has spent just a couple of the months on the lees to give depth and mouth-feel to balance the freshness. At such great value there’s always a reason to pop open a bottle of fizz especially as the festive season approaches!

Pasión de Bobal 2014, Utiel-Requena, Spain £10.50 2 bottles
Autumn is here and our thoughts turn to full and comforting reds to accompany the darker evenings. Dee has plumped for this delicious Bobal for this month’s ‘Wines We Love’ and rightly so!
A full-flavoured, fruit-forward red where cherry, plum and sweet spice, vanilla and liquorice, flavours prevail. Bodegas Sierra Norte select grapes from the oldest, low-yielding Bobal vines in the Fuenteseca Estate for their bottle of Pasión. An organically produced wine thanks to the hot, dry summers, cool nights and the poor soils of the high plateau of Utiel-Requena which successfully deter disease.
Autumn months are certainly no hardship with tasty wines like this to choose from!

Noble Savage 2011, Stellenbosch, South Africa £11.50 2 bottles
A playful Bordeaux-inspired blend bursting with sweet black cherries, classic cassis and spice. The fruit, 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, comes from the vertiginous slopes of the stunning Helshoogte Pass. Bartinney’s winemaker Ronell Wild’s clearly has a lot of fun making her Noble Savage range of wines which reflect her own exuberant and mischievous personality whilst being carefully crafted. This intensely fruity blend combines plenty of complexity from the Cabernet Sauvignon with the ‘softer and sensuous’ Merlot.

San Felice Chianti Classico 2013, Toscana, Italy £12.50 2 bottles
A fine and incredibly satisfying Chianti Classico. First met with generously fruity aromas and a little spice followed by the hall-mark flavours of Sangiovese grapes, red cherry and savoury. Not only do San Felice select top-notch grapes from a single estate but they also follow a non-interventionist approach to get the best and freshest characters from their fruit. This medium-bodied red, aged in large old oak barrels (Slovenian botti), will happily partner your favourite autumnal Italian dishes or Antipasti.

Wirra Wirra Chardonnay 2014, Adelaide Hills, South Australia £11.00 2 bottles
A personal favourite and an impressive Chardonnay from the Wirra Wirra winery founded in the late 1800’s and revived in the 1960’s after a period of disrepair. A well-made burgundy-style white, the texture and palate are refined with yellow stone fruit and honey characters, the finish is clean and the oak influence is fine and skilfully integrated. This is a fabulous value wine which could be rather nice with pan-seared scallops or enjoyed as a treat on its own.

K-Naia 2015, Rueda, Spain 2 bottles £10.00 2 bottles
A top class and crowd-pleasing aromatic white which combines the Verdejo grape variety with a splash of Sauvignon Blanc. The nose brims with passion fruit, pink grapefruit and delicate grassy aromas. The palate is dry with rich stone fruits, giving way to a zesty and mineral finish with a little fennel twist. Bodegas Naia located in the ‘Grand Cru’ of Rueda wine region, La Seca, combine fruit from mature vines, meticulous grape selection and lees-ageing to produce wines which are delicate yet beautifully ripe and textured. K-Naia and tapas go hand-in -hand.
